A distinguished officer of the 1986 batch of the Indian Railway Service of Mechanical Engineers (IRSME), Shri Satish Kumar has devoted more than three decades to Indian Railways, holding several strategic leadership positions across different railway zones. His extensive experience, combined with a strong technical background, has made him one of the most respected railway administrators in the country.
A Career Built on Technical Excellence and Leadership:
Shri Satish Kumar holds a B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, along with a Post Graduate Diploma in Operation Management and Cyber Law from IGNOU. Since joining Indian Railways in March 1988, he has served across multiple divisions, contributing significantly to locomotive engineering, rolling stock management, and operational efficiency.
His early assignments included:
- Jhansi Division of the erstwhile Central Railway
- Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi
- North Eastern Railway, Gorakhpur
- Patiala Locomotive Works
These assignments provided him with extensive technical and operational expertise that shaped his distinguished career.
Driving Innovation and Safety Across Indian Railways:
Throughout his career, Shri Satish Kumar has consistently championed innovation and quality improvement. In 1996, he received specialized Total Quality Management (TQM) training under the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), strengthening his approach towards operational excellence and continuous improvement.
Among his most notable achievements is the development and advancement of the Fog Safe Device, an innovative technology that significantly improves train safety during dense fog conditions. The system has become an essential safety tool, particularly across northern India, where winter fog frequently affects railway operations.

Shri Satish Kumar has successfully led several important assignments that strengthened railway administration and passenger services.

- General Manager, North Central Railway, Prayagraj
- Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Lucknow Division, Northern Railway
- Senior Deputy General Manager & Chief Vigilance Officer, North Western Railway, Jaipur
- Member (Traction & Rolling Stock), Railway Board
- Chairman & CEO, Railway Board
During his tenure as DRM, Lucknow, he successfully managed railway operations for the 2019 Kumbh Mela, ensuring efficient movement of millions of pilgrims through meticulous planning and coordination.
