Kochi ।The Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Naval Ship Repair Yard, Kochi culminated with a Technical Symposium at Naval Base, Kochi on 24 Jan 23. The theme of the symposium was ‘Leveraging Homegrown Technology for Indigenous Ship Repairs and Process Improvements. The Symposium witnessed a host of dignitaries from Shipyards, MSMEs, other industries and senior officers across the verticals of the Indian Navy. The inaugural address was delivered by Vice Admiral MA Hampiholi, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Naval Command, whereas the keynote address was delivered by Vice Admiral Sandeep Naithani, Chief of Materiel.
Technical papers on various aspects of indigenisation, ship repairs and resource planning towards increasing operational readiness were discussed and presented during the symposium. In addition, technical expo was also setup at the venue, showcasing indigenous capabilities and expertise in ship repairs for self-reliance. Further, three separate MoUs between Indian Navy and MSMEs of Southern India Defence Corridor, namely, AIEMA (Ambattur Industrial Estate Manufacturers Association) at Chennai, TREAT (Tiruchirapalli Engineering and Technology Cluster) at Tiruchirapalli and CODISSIA (Coimbatore District Small Industries Association) were also signed and released on the occasion.
The Naval Ship Repair Yard, Kochi traces its root back in 1948 when it was established as Base Repair Organization with a slipway, boat repair shop and yard utility services. In 1973, an Apprentices Training School was established to meet ship repair requirements and to train & develop technical competence. On 16 Aug 1988, the Base Repair Organisation, Cochin was re-christened as the Naval Ship Repair Yard (NSRY), Kochi headed by Commodore BR Menon as the Commodore Superintendent in 2012. The Superintendence was upgraded to the rank of Rear Admiral, with Rear Admiral S Madhusudnanan as the first Admiral Superintendent. The yard is presently headed by Rear Admiral Subir Mukherjee as the Admiral Superintendent. Being the only such facility in the entire Southem Naval Command, the yard provides technical assistance and undertakes repair and maintenance of ships, crafts and boats of Southern Naval Command as well as visiting ships.
